There is another factor which had a significant impact on the final outcome: the speed at which the highjackers were flying the plane when they hit their targets. Planes usually fly at around 280/300 km/h at sea level where the air is very thick. These guys were flying at around 800 km/h which is an unbelievable speed for such low altitude.
